When Sean Kugler stood in front of a dais back in February announcing his latest signing class, with the usual caveat that he didn't care about star ratings or website rankings, Trace Mascorro was an unlikely bet to be the first player in it to get on the field.
Mascorro was a zero-star prospect who picked UTEP over football scholarship offers from Stephen F. Austin and Houston Baptist, an undersized (he's listed at 6-foot but he's probably not) nosetackle from a Class 2A school with 200 students.
