NAU handles cold-shooting Miners

The UTEP women's basketball team went into its opener against Northern Arizona with exactly one known quantity on offense — the scoring ability of Sparkle Taylor — and a bunch of unknowns.

Forty minutes and one 65-51 loss later, that's still where they stand.

After Taylor watched her team dig a 10-point halftime hole when she was on the bench in foul trouble, she scored 18 consecutive Miner points to start the second half, in the process almost single-handedly erasing a deficit that had grown as large as 15.

That was never a solution to UTEP's offensive problems, just a time-buyer to sort some other things out.
