One notable player who helped himself in UTEP's Friday scrimmage was tailback Treyvon Hughes, who is in a battle with TK Powell for what will be a backup role behind Aaron Jones in the fall.
Hughes didn't get untracked on the ground in the move-the-ball and red zone sessions, as he had five carries for 13 yards, but he caught three passes for 50 yards and two touchdowns. Toward the end of the scrimmage, in a fourth-and-1 situation where stats weren't being kept, he busted a 48-yard run before being tackled on the 2-yard line.
"We're having a battle for backup running back and Treyvon Hughes took a big step forward," coach Sean Kugler said.
