A maddening trend for the UTEP football team has been slow starts. The Miners have not scored on an opening possession this year, while the last six opponents have scored on their first drive.
UTEP had this problem in coach Sean Kugler's first season in 2013, and he made a practice change to start each workout with a team session that pits the first-team offense against the first-team defense. The Miners are still doing that.
"We've got to practice that way," coach Sean Kugler said. "There's no magic dust you put out to start fast. We start fast in practice, we just need to carry that over to games.
