While the UTEP defense is filled with returners, many of those are in new positions as the scheme shifts from a 4-2-5 to a 3-4.
That doesn't dramatically affect the secondary, and the old man back there is safety Dashone Smith, the only senior among the starters.
"I've been here five years, it feels great being back here and getting comfortable in the new defense," Smith said. "I like this defense a lot. It gives us a chance to go out and play, there isn't as much thinking. It gives us a chance to play physically and we can set an example.
