UTEP can build around senior inside linebackers

RUIDOSO, N.M. — Plan A rarely comes to exist in an organization as large and unwieldy as a college football team.

Managing a roster of 100 football players necessarily involves ad-libbing, improvising and adjusting.

Except, in the case of this UTEP football team, the inside linebacker positions in their 16-month-old 3-4 defense.

The starters are a pair of seniors in Alvin Jones and Dante Lovilotte, who ranked first and second on the team respectively last season in tackles. That pretty much defines Plan A. The backups are a pair of talented prospects in juniors transfer Jamar Smith and former tailback Trayvon Hughes, a sophomore.
