There's no way around it: When a college football team puts freshmen on the island that is the cornerback position, there are going to be growing pains.
That was true two years ago when UTEP's Nik Needham and Kalon Beverly journeyed out to that island in a defensive scheme that then was all about corners playing straight man coverage.
That was not an ideal situation in 2015, but there is a flip side.
Freshmen don't stay freshmen. Needham and Beverly started 20 games between them last season as sophomores, a year after combining for 17 starts as freshmen.
