The UTEP women's basketball team always figured to be able to overmatch UT Permian Basin with its defense.
For more than a quarter, the Falcons defied that with a string of 3-pointers that briefly had them in the game. That wasn't a likely formula for sustained success, but the degree to which it collapsed in what turned into an 86-32 Miner victory was remarkable by any measure.
With 7:19 left in the second quarter, UT Permian Basin's Sierra LeGrande hit a 3-pointer that got her team within 21-18, and at that point the Falcons were 6-of-11 from the field and 5-of-8 from beyond the arc.
